Bolt tokens running out? How to fix it and make them last (2026)

Hit the "out of tokens" wall in Bolt.new halfway through your app? You're not alone: it's one of the most common beginner complaints. Here's what's actually happening and what to do about it, based on Bolt's own help center and pricing page.
Quick fix: what to do right now
- Hit the free daily cap (300K)? Wait for tomorrow's reset, or keep going by editing code yourself in Code view, which uses no tokens.
- Used the free 1M for the month? Your tokens come back on the 1st of the month.
- On Pro and out? Upgrade to a bigger token tier (Bolt says it's the cheapest way), or buy a reload if you're on the top monthly tier or an annual plan.
- Can't wait and building something real? Pro removes the daily cap and gives 10M tokens a month with rollover, $25/mo monthly or $18/mo billed yearly.
Why your tokens disappear so fast
A token is a small piece of text the AI reads or writes. Bolt says most of your token use comes from reading, understanding and syncing your project's files, so every message costs more as your app grows. A request that cost little in a brand-new project can cost many times more once you have dozens of files. On top of that, long chat history, connectors you switched on, and clicking Attempt fix again and again all add up.
Free vs Pro token limits
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly tokens | 1M | Starts at 10M |
| Daily limit | 300K (resets daily, doesn't carry over) | No daily limit |
| When tokens reset | 1st of each calendar month | Your renewal date each month |
| Unused tokens roll over | No | Yes, valid for 2 months |
| Buy extra tokens | No | Reloads on the top monthly tier and annual plans (never expire) |
| Price | $0 | $25/mo monthly, $18/mo billed yearly ($216 a year) |
8 ways to use fewer Bolt tokens
- Plan in Plan mode first. Bolt says Plan mode uses fewer tokens because it doesn't change your code. Agree on the approach, then switch to Build.
- Click buttons instead of prompting. Publish with the Publish button and undo with Version history. Buttons use no tokens; asking the AI to do the same thing does.
- Stop clicking Attempt fix on repeat. Each try costs tokens. After one or two, switch to Plan mode, ask what's wrong, or ask Bolt to add detailed error logging around the broken part.
- Roll back instead of fixing a bad change. Version history restores an earlier working version for free.
- Clear context when you finish a feature. Type
/clearin the chat and pick Clear context. Bolt still sees your files but forgets the long history, so messages cost less. - Keep prompts short and focused as the project grows. Point Bolt at the specific file or part of the page instead of the whole app, and add one feature at a time.
- Pick the Standard agent for everyday tasks. Save the Max agent for genuinely complex work, since it uses more tokens.
- Turn connectors on only when you need them, and make tiny text or color tweaks yourself in Code view.
Is it time to upgrade?
Upgrade when you hit the 300K daily cap before most sessions end, your project is past a few screens, or you're about to share it and want your own domain without Bolt branding. Stay free if you're still testing small ideas. Our Is Bolt Pro worth it? guide goes through it in detail, and AI app builder credits explained compares Bolt tokens with Lovable, Replit and v0 credits. If tokens keep running out because your app has grown into a big codebase, you may be ready for an AI code editor like Cursor, where you work on the files directly; compare prices in the cheapest AI coding tool guide.

Before you share your Lovable or Bolt app
Four quick checks that catch the most common beginner problems:
- Page loads but can't reach its data after you deploy somewhere else? Vite apps (what Lovable and Bolt make) bake
VITE_settings in when the app is built, so add them to your host's environment settings and rebuild. - Using Supabase file storage? Open Storage and check each bucket. Files in a public bucket can be opened by anyone with the link: fine for logos, not for user uploads.
- Using a Supabase database? Make sure Row Level Security is turned on for every table that holds user data, so people can only see their own rows.
- Using an AI model or a payment service? Ask your builder: "Is any secret API key in code that runs in the browser?" Visitors can read anything the browser loads, so secret keys belong in a server function or your project's secrets settings.
FAQ
Why does Bolt use so many tokens?
Bolt says most token use comes from reading, understanding and syncing your project files, so the bigger your project gets, the more tokens every message costs. Long chat history, connectors that are switched on and repeated automatic fix attempts add more.
When do Bolt tokens reset?
On the free plan, the 1M monthly tokens reset on the 1st of each calendar month and the 300K daily cap resets every day (unused daily tokens don't carry over). On a paid plan, tokens reset on your renewal date, for example the 15th of each month if you subscribed on the 15th.
Can I keep working on Bolt with zero tokens?
Yes, a little. Editing your existing code directly in Code view uses no tokens, and so do on-screen buttons like Publish and Version history. Anything that asks the AI to build or change your app needs tokens.
Can I buy more Bolt tokens?
Bolt says upgrading to a higher-tier plan is the most cost-effective way to get more. Token reloads are only offered on the highest monthly Pro tier and on annual Pro plans, and reloaded tokens don't expire. The free plan has no reloads.
Do I lose my rollover tokens if I cancel Pro?
Yes, when the billing cycle ends you lose access to all allocated tokens, including rollover. If you resubscribe before they expire (two months from when they were issued), you get the unexpired ones back.
